Who I Am
Hello! I am Jason Sullivan, a costume designer and haunted house enthusiast from the suburbs of Illinois who enjoys making weird and wild art. Coming from a foundation of helping my mom craft the costumes me and my sister wore for our youth theater productions, I found my love for crafting and sewing outweighed the love of being on stage. Since the age of 11 I preferred to thrift, tailor, and sew my own costumes for Halloween or comic conventions and believed that buying costumes was a cop-out. I then wanted to share my talent with the world.
It wasn’t until I found the haunted house industry in the American midwest that I discovered a perfect outlet for my passions. I just had to get brave enough to take my opportunity. I used to be afraid of my own shadow, anxiety and paranoia would bubble up inside of me at the smallest inconvenience. I was never meant to go through haunted houses. Then I eventually found a beautiful peace with them, finding a safe space to let out my fear and go through my day to day life living unafraid. That beautiful peace led to obsession, and I knew this is what I would have to do for the rest of my life. Creating and building characters was the avenue forged for me.
In my costume design I love implementing the weird that stems from haunted houses as well. I always like to say I’ve had a sandbox of experience, having designed plays, musicals, short films, dance pieces, solo concerts, comedy shows, and play festivals. I like to take any opportunity as it arises. I really value collaboration and accessibility in my work. Having worked with extremely diverse groups that I take away different ideas from that I continue to implement in my future projects.
